Benjamin "Benny" Cervantes' Obituary
Benjamin Anthony Cervantes, affectionately known as Benny, passed away on January 14, 2026, at the age of 43, while doing what he loved most—surfing the ocean that had always felt like home to him. He was born on October 10, 1982, in Ventura, California, a place that shaped his spirit and remained the backdrop of his life, surrounded by family, lifelong friends, and the sea.
Benny was a devoted partner to Rene Loya and a deeply loving, proud father to his son, Benjamin Michael Cervantes, who was the greatest joy of his life and the center of his world. He is survived by his parents, Benjamin and Denise Cervantes; his sisters, Stephanie Kaness and Shannon Tofiga (Faleapoi) ; his nephews, William and Tyler Hulsberg; his nieces, Jillian Hulsberg and Leilani Tofiga; Godchildren William Hulsberg, Aalyiah and Andre Bruns, Jasiah Muse, and Robert Mitchell; and many extended family members and cherished friends who were more like family. He was preceded in death by grandparents Benjamin and Maria Cervantes; and Floyd McCoy and Margaret Tyler.
A graduate of Rio Mesa High School in 2000, Benny went on to build a respected career as a skilled drywall taper. He was known for his craftsmanship, strong work ethic, and dependability—qualities that mirrored who he was in life: steady, loyal, and sincere.
Above all, Benny treasured being a father. Time spent with his son—bike rides, trips, and everyday adventures—were sacred to him, and he poured his heart into creating memories that would last a lifetime. He found peace and joy in the outdoors: surfing at the beach, camping under open skies, golfing, slot-car racing, and fishing on the lake with his dad. He also loved cheering on the Dodgers, traveling to Las Vegas, and sharing laughter with his close-knit group of lifelong friends.
Benny had a generous soul and an open heart. He was always ready to lend a hand, share a meal, or make someone feel welcome. He found joy in simple moments—barbecuing with family, cooking for those he loved, and filling every gathering with warmth, humor, and his unmistakable, infectious laugh.
Benjamin Anthony Cervantes will be remembered for his deep love of family, his adventurous spirit, and the kindness he showed so freely. Though his time with us was far too short, his legacy lives on in the countless lives he touched and in the hearts of all who loved him. His spirit will forever move like the ocean he loved—enduring, powerful, and full of life.
