William Joseph Farrell's Obituary
William Joseph "Joe" Farrell, a proud U.S. Navy veteran, devoted husband, and longtime resident of Camarillo, California, passed away peacefully on June 2, 2025, at the age of 87.
Joe was born on December 30, 1937, in Charlotte, North Carolina, to Philip Augustine Farrell and Mary Lounita Farrell. He grew up in Augusta, Georgia, and attended Jefferson High School before earning his GED. He later pursued studies at Oxnard College.
At just 18, Joe enlisted in the United States Navy, beginning a distinguished career that spanned over two decades. He completed boot camp at Great Lakes, Illinois, and went on to serve with distinction in various commands, including FASRON 8 Det, FITRON 151, and as an F-4 Navy Liaison at Hill Air Force Base. He also served aboard the USS Coral Sea (CVA-43), supporting operations during the Vietnam War.
Rising to the rank of Aviation Storekeeper Senior Chief Petty Officer (AKCS/E8), Joe retired from active duty on June 30, 1977, after 22 years and 5 months of service. His military decorations include the National Defense Medal, Philippine Presidential Unit Citation, Vietnam Service Medal, Vietnam Campaign Medal, and six Good Conduct Awards.
Following his military retirement, Joe continued serving his country in a civilian role. From 1977 to 1998, he worked as a logistics specialist for seven different companies supporting testing operations at NAS Point Mugu.
On April 18, 1959, Joe married the love of his life, Bonnie Jean Smith, at St. Theresa Catholic Church in Carson City, Nevada. Joe, in his Navy dress blues, and Bonnie, in a white gown, began a marriage that lasted 66 years. Together, they built a life grounded in faith, family, and service, raising five children: Patricia, Terence, Catherine, Kristine, and Karen.
Joe was a loving and present father and grandfather. He coached his daughters in softball and soccer, attended their high school basketball games, and was a loyal supporter at his grandchildren's many sporting events. He had a deep love of reading, a strong interest in politics, and a passion for financial independence.
Joe is preceded in death by his parents, his siblings Phil, Joy, and Judy, and his beloved daughter Patricia. He is survived by his wife, Bonnie Jean Farrell; his children Terence (Barbara) Farrell, Catherine (Thomas) Glenn, Kristine (Christopher) McCarthy, and Karen Gonzalez; 13 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews who adored their "Uncle Joe."
A celebration of life will be held in his honor, and a ceremonial scattering of his ashes at sea is planned for July 5, 2025 - a proper tribute for a sailor who gave so much to his country and family.Fair winds and following seas.
