Richard Dewey Roper's Obituary
Richard Dewey Roper, lovingly known as “Dick,” passed away peacefully on May 22, 2026, at the age of 92. Born on September 15, 1933, Richard lived a long and meaningful life defined by devotion to family, hard work, kindness, and quiet strength.
Richard grew up in Los Angeles and later moved to Manhattan Beach, where he enjoyed playing high school football and considered continuing the sport in college before being drafted into the United States Army. Before being deployed to Korea, he married the love of his life, Arlene, beginning a partnership that would endure for 61 years.
Following his honorable discharge from the Army, Richard worked at Metlox Pottery in Manhattan Beach before beginning a long and respected career with Southern California Edison as a lineman. During this time, he and Arlene welcomed their three children — daughter Terry, followed by sons Bob and Jerry.
After being promoted to Underground Service Inspector, Richard relocated his family from Anaheim to Ventura. Together, Richard and Arlene created a loving home and became examples of dedication, generosity, and commitment to both immediate and extended family. Richard will be remembered for his steadfast character, warm heart, and unwavering support of those around him. He touched countless lives through his wisdom, kindness, humor, and willingness to help others.
Having witnessed remarkable change across nine decades, Richard maintained a deep appreciation for family, hard work, community, and the simple joys of everyday life. Whether through conversation, laughter, or quiet acts of care, he created memories that will be treasured for generations.
After Arlene passed away in 2014, Richard carried her memory closely in his heart and remained devoted to the home and life they built together. He continued her spirit of community service by volunteering as a driver for HELP of Ojai. Only in his final year did he choose to move to the Ventura TowneHouse, where he became known as an enthusiastic Bingo player who greatly appreciated the staff and friendships he found there.
Richard was fortunate to be surrounded by exceptional caregivers, dear church and community friends, and his beloved companion Pepper, his Cocker Spaniel.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Arlene; his mother, Nan; his father, Edmund; and his brother, Ernie.
Richard is survived by his children, Terry, Bob, and Jerry; numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren; and many extended family members and friends who will continue to honor his memory and legacy.
A celebration of Richard’s life is being planned by the family and will be announced at a later date.
