Nellouise "Nell" August's Obituary
Our mother, Nellouise (Nell) August, left us at age 89 on February 15, 2026. The profound emptiness we feel without her is reconciled by the knowledge that she is free from struggle and at peace.
Nell was born May 16, 1936, in Paia on the island of Maui, Hawaii to Joseph and Cressie Viveiros. The family later moved Nell and her two brothers Joseph and Patrick (both deceased) to Oahu where she attended St. Francis Convent high school. She met her husband, Abel S. August, Jr (deceased) at a school dance, which led to their marriage of 61 years. They enjoyed their early years with daughter Michele sailing on their boat and spending time with family. They moved to CA in 1969, but never forgot their roots, sharing the spirit of Aloha in their new home and modeling the importance of staying connected to family (Ohana) and friends.
Nell became a registered nurse in 1957 and began a life of selfless care and compassion for others. After moving to Oxnard in 1969, she became the nurse/office manager of Cabrillo Cardiology, helping to grow and establish the practice. Nell later brought her experience of surviving breast cancer to the patients of the Radiation Oncology Center of Ventura County, retiring in her 70’s. Nell’s tender care and genuine empathy for those experiencing health/life challenges was fundamental to her character. Her relentless dedication to her family, patients, and community - checking up on patients after work, bringing them meals, and walking side by side with families through hardship - had a profound effect on her daughter Michele and guides her to this day.
Nell was an avid gardener who derived much joy from her gardens. She cultivated roses, orchids, plumerias, and succulents and was a member of the Rose Society. Nell’s Catholic faith grounded her and she generously donated her time as an active member of Padre Serra Church.
Nell’s fiery spirit, sly sense of humor, and playful nature are how we will remember her. Perhaps the greatest gift Nell (and Abel) gave was unrelenting support and generosity to their daughter Michele Borchard and son-in-law David, their two grandchildren Kate B. Schoen (Josh) and Ian Borchard, and great granddaughter, Aria. Her impact on our lives, and on the lives of those who knew her, cannot be measured and will not be forgotten.
Please join the family to say aloha and mahalo to a great lady. Vigil on March 18, 4-6pm Visitation / 6pm Service at Ivy Lawn Mortuary, Camarillo. Funeral on March 19, 10am at Padre Serra Church, Camarillo with burial to follow. A celebration of Nell and Abe’s lives will follow at 12:30pm.
