Joseph Louis O'Connor's Obituary
Joseph (Joe) O'Connor passed away January 17, 2024. Joe was born August 25, 1926 in Providence, Rhode Island to James and Kathleen O'Connor. He is preceded in death by his sister, Helen Cottam (Ken), twin sister Joan Guilfoyle, brothers Robert (Bob) O'Connor, Michael O'Connor and James O'Connor, daughter Connie (O'Connor) Niemi. At the beginning of his high school years Joe's family moved to Ridgefield Park, New Jersey. He made lifetime friends during those years. He traveled to California to visit one of those friends and remained in San Diego for many years. He worked for the San Diego Printers. While in San Diego he became an avid Padres fan and held season tickets to the San Diego Chargers for over 35 years.In the early 70s he moved his family to the Los Angeles area. He was office manager for Keuffel and Esser (K&E). When K&E went out of business he formed his own courier company until retirement age. In 1980, he met Lois Harrington Butrovich and married her in 1982. When he retired he moved with his wife, Lois, to Port Hueneme, CA.During his retirement years he volunteered in many capacities, worked part-time and pursued his hobbies. Joe was very proud of his twenty-five years as a docent at the Channel Islands Maritime Museum in Oxnard. He enjoyed being the volunteer school librarian at St. Anthony's School in Oxnard and being an usher at St. Anthony's Church. For twenty years he worked two hours a day serving breakfast at schools in the Oxnard School District. When his work day ended he would voluntarily read to classes at the school. He felt his time at the school district was a joy.Joe's hobbies were reading, completing crossword puzzles, playing bridge, billiards, poker, and traveling. In his younger years he enjoyed sailing.Joe is survived by wife, Lois, son, Randy O'Connor, step-sons John Butrovich and Ed Butrovich, step-daughter, Cathy Kuiken, grandchildren, Amanda Niemi Curry, Kris Niemi, Crystal Alexander (Kelly), Matthew Butrovich (Morgan), Garrett Kuiken, Jacob Kuiken, Kacey Hammond (Caleb), Cody Butrovich, Austin Butrovich, Nathan Butrovich-Gallardo, and Karlo Gallardo, six great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.There will be a Visitation January 30, 2024 at 6:00 PM at Ivy Lawn Funeral Home, 1075 E. Daily Dr. Camarillo, CA 93010, followed by a Rosary at 7:00 PM. A Funeral Mass will be held January 31, 2024 at 10:00AM at Padre Serra Catholic Church, 5205 Upland Rd. Camarillo, CA 93012.In lieu of flowers the family is suggesting that donations be made in Joe's name to Channel Islands Maritime Museum, St. Anthony Catholic School in Oxnard, or Life Centers of Ventura County.
